It was fitting that I was able to get out for a ride on New Year’s Day almost in spite of myself.
The holidays are always tough- between the over abundance of high calorie foods and frequent social gatherings it’s quite difficult to get any sort of regular exercise. I’d planned to do the Craftsbury Winter Tri in January, but with the onslaught of heavy snow the roads were impassible. The rollers have been getting some attention and have mainly been keeping me sane and remotely active.
Fortunately I have a Carver O’Beast ti fat bike to ride for a few weeks so I’ve gotten out on that a couple times. What’s it like riding a fat bike? Probably the best description I can give is that it’s like snowshoes for a mountain bike- bigger, more stable, all terrain capable and much slower. There’s a split between clipless pedals and platforms, but so far I’ve only ridden with platforms.
As I get more time on this beast I’ll post my thoughts. So far it’s been a fun alternative to riding inside and skiing. Is it mountain biking? No, but it’s similar enough that it’s fun once you get the program for cornering, handling, etc. It’s also remarkably easy to stay warm even on very cold days if you dress properly.
